Il s'agit d'une exposition qui aspire à dépasser la catégorie du canular propre à l'histoire des littératures, le canular se contentant généralement de leurrer, d'abuser, sans produire rien d'autre qu'un mensonge de plus ou moins de style. Si Félicien Marbœuf n'a jamais existé sous cette identité, son invention ne relève aucunement de l'imposture, qu'elle soit potache ou érudite. Il symbolise très sérieusement tous les artistes sans œuvre au même titre que le Soldat inconnu est salué au nom de tous les hommes tombés anonymement au champ d'honneur.

Jean-Yves Jouannais has conceived an exhibition based around Félicien Marbœuf, known in his lifetime as ‘the greatest writer never having written’. About twenty artists, with a mix of disciplines, have agreed to participate in this commemorative project. If Félicien Marbœuf never existed with this identity, his invention is in no way fraudulent, he very seriously symbolises all artists without a work of art, in the same way as the Unknown Soldier paid tribute to in the name of all the men who anonymously fell during battle.

Jean-Yves Jouannais est né en 1964. Il a été rédacteur en chef de la revue Art Press pendant neuf ans et co-fondateur en 1995 de la Revue Perpendiculaire. Il est également critique d'art et commissaire d'expositions (Biennale de Venise, 1995 ; Le Fou dédoublé. L'idiotie dans l'art du XXe siècle, Moscou, 2000 ; Lost in the supermaket, Fondation Ricard, 2001 ; La Force de l'art 02 , Grand Palais, avril 2009). Il a, en outre, entamé un cycle de conférences-performances intitulé L'Encyclopédie des guerres au Centre Pompidou, programmé pour les quatre prochaines années. Il est également l'auteur de plusieurs essais.
